Working Group GES meeting
Last 19th of March 2019 Marine Technology Centre (CTN) attended the 21st meeting of the Working Group on Good Environmental Status (WG GES) to present the QUIETMED project results. WG GES support Member States in the determination of GES for the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. Through the QUIETMED project results, CTN as coordinator together with SHOM provided recommendations to Competent Authorities to improve the determination and assessment of the Good Environmental Status in the second cycle of the MSFD implementation. Main QUIETMED project contributions to support Member States are related to:
- Recommendation to Member States about how to move from a pressure based approach to a risk based assessment.
- Proposal of a common framework to assess the quality level achieved of each criterion impulsive and continuous sound.
- Tool for the establishment of baseline levels: The Impulsive noise register in the Mediterranean Sea Region.
- Guidelines to improve the coherency and consistency regarding underwater noise measurements.
Also, the QUIETMED project outcomes have already had a practical use and transferability. The Spanish Marine Strategy has included the pilot project results as the only experimental results in the updated D11C2 criteria assessment. Based on the QUIETMED guidelines, Guidance Fact Sheets for noise Candidate Indicators are proposed in the framework of the EcAp process-Barcelona Convention. CeNOBS project -Support MSFD implementation in the Black Sea through establishing a regional monitoring system of cetaceans (D1) and noise monitoring (D11) for achieving GES- will take advantage of the results and outcomes of the QUIETMED project regarding noise monitoring.
